English Language Proficiency

The English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirement to become a member is in place to ensure that applicants have the ability to communicate effectively in all areas (reading, writing, listening and speaking). It is important that all practitioners communicate effectively to ensure that they provide safe and ethical treatment and to ensure that they are providing the care that patients need.

The MTAA does not accept the diploma for training in massage therapy to meet the ELP requirement. The MTAA does accept proof of an applicant’s ELP through any of the following means:

  • High School Diploma or High School Transcript
  • GED Completion or Equivalent
  • Other Post-Secondary Education completed outside of your Massage Therapy program.
  • Completion of one of the following Standardized English Language Test:
    • IELTS (AC or GT) – Minimum Score of 7 in all Areas
    • CELPIP General – Minimum Score of 8 in all Areas
    • CLBPT (Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test) – Minimum Overall Average of 6
    • TOEFL iBT – Minimum Scores in Writing: 20/ Speaking: 20/ Listening:20/ Reading: 19

If applicants cannot provide any of the above information, they are asked to contact the MTAA Office by calling 403-340-1913 to discuss further.
